Here on island Krk, folk dance is always performed in pairs. During a carefully thought-out combination of steps, the peak happens just when a girl spins around herself. But she never spins with all her might. There is always a man who holds her hand or runs around her like a rooster.
She prefer to dance alone. Because that's when magic happens. If she spins long enough and hard enough, the whole world around her becomes covered in gold. Really! Sparks begin to fly all around her. They look like flames carried by the wind. Flames that flicker, flicker ... And with a flash they release small forest goblins who join her in dance.
They also protect her from intrusive dancers.
Because, don’t be fooled, even though they are small and seem tame, their teeth are made of sharp edges and unexpected angles. Guess for what.
Another one from my Croatian mythology and folklore series.
